That would have been the virtually unknown first-ever Fete de la Musique ... a fine French tradition to celebrate the solstice that a private group attempted to launch here. Hopefully they will get some funding and attention and make it an annual event, as it is throughout France.

It's terrible news, and I can't bear to think of how she died. I'd rather remember Julia sitting in The Emerald after those terrible layoffs. She was down at the time -- as of course all the dot-commers were, whether they had been pink-slipped or not -- but definitely not out.

Bryan called me with the news today and although I only knew of Julia, I was shocked to hear of what happened. She will be missed and would have been very touched to have seen how much her friends grieve for her.

Sometimes, Josh, I think there is nobody you don't know. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend, and I feel terrible that such things happen to Peace Corps volunteers (my brother was one for a bit), since they're just trying to help people who need it. Quel dommage.

Coincidentally, I was just reading about this garden! Garden Design magazine had an article about French Public Gardens, and the Promenade Plantee was among them. You might be able to find the piece online, it mentioned several others.

The Europeans seem fond of this sort of thing. I have pictures of political posters that I took in both Vienna and Bratislava (I think) that are just big head-on portraits of political candidates. Do you think that works better than our endless political TV commercials? Certainly less annoying!

COCK fighting has recently been banned as signed into law by presidential hopeful and current New Mexico governor, Bill Richardson. Although argued as a Hispanic cultural icon, most consider it a barbarous sport--cruel, messy--and the Kleenex costs!
